Sterling Ranch: Industry Award-Private Sector Winner, 2015

The 2015 ACRA private sector award was presented to the Sterling Ranch Development Company, LLC, Douglas County, Colorado. Sterling Ranch is developing one of the largest undeveloped tracts of land within the South Platte River Basin of greater metropolitan Denver. The area contains numerous cultural resources along the Platte River. One parcel of the master planned community, previously owned by the State Land Board, required cultural resource studies to determine impacts on cultural resources. Despite no federal nexus requiring compliance with NHPA Section 106 on the remaining parcels, Sterling Ranch undertook efforts to consider impacts by conducting cultural resource surveys of the entire development, designing and implementing a construction discovery protocol, and establishing a Heritage Park to protect part of the Scott Spring Site, a significant archaeological site. ACRA member ERO Resources Corporation surveyed 932 acres and developed the discovery protocol in coordination with Sterling Ranch and the State Archaeologist. The discovery protocol requires dissemination of educational materials to construction managers, engineers, and heavy equipment operators to assist in recognition of archaeological remains during construction.
