National Register Archeology 101: Evaluating the Significance and Integrity of Archeological Resources

    When: Friday, May 3, 2024, 10 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Where: Ohio History Center, 800 E. 17th Ave., Columbus, OH 43211, and online via Zoom

Kick off Historic Preservation Month by joining the Ohio Archaeological Council and Ohio's State Historic Preservation Office for a seminar on applying the National Register of Historic Places Criteria for Evaluation to archaeological resources. The event is free, with in-person (75 maximum) and online participation options available, but registration is required. A box lunch will be provided for in-person participants.

The morning will feature four presentations by archaeologists on identifying and evaluating archaeological resources. In the afternoon, learn from the National Park Service’s National Register archaeologist about applying the National Register Criteria to archaeological resources, followed by SHPO staff discussing procedures for nominating archaeological properties to the National Register and evaluating archaeological resources within regulatory processes.

Attendees will gain insights from leading professionals like Albert M. Pecora from Ohio Valley Archaeology, Inc., who will discuss the importance of geophysical surveys, and Kevin R. Schwarz along with David F. Klinge from ASC Group, Inc., who will delve into the significance of A horizons and middens. Evan Peacock and Kevin C. Nolan, representing The Cobb Institute of Archaeology at Mississippi State University and Applied Anthropology Laboratories at Ball State University respectively, will critique current Cultural Resource Management practices, suggesting advanced methodologies for archaeological significance evaluation. Robert Chidester from The Mannik & Smith Group, Inc., will offer a fresh perspective on evaluating post-contact archaeological sites. This seminar promises to equip participants with the latest techniques and theoretical knowledge in archaeology, directly from the experts themselves.

The seminar will provide useful information to anyone who evaluates archaeological resources through the National Historic Preservation Act Section 106/110 processes, under Ohio Revised Code 149.53, or the National Register nomination process. Target audiences include archaeology consultants, local, state, and federal agency staff, American Indian tribal representatives, SHPO/THPO staff, state review board members, and Certified Local Governments.

CRM firms have a lot at stake when Congress makes policy decisions that impact their bottom line. And there’s no better way to make sure lawmakers hear the industry’s point of view than meeting them in person.

ACRA members have a powerful story to tell policymakers about the importance of cultural resources management. As Congress debates policies that impact the CRM industry, it’s more important than ever to make sure lawmakers hear that story.

That’s why ACRA is holding its annual Capitol Hill Fly-In May 7-8, 2024.

Don’t miss this chance to join your fellow CRM professionals in meeting with your members of Congress to discuss issues important to the industry. ACRA will arrange your meetings and provide training beforehand. There is no cost to register for the Fly-In, but you are responsible for making your travel and lodging accommodations.

ACRA needs time to get your meetings scheduled, so sign up now before it is too late!
