CRM firms have a lot at stake when Congress makes policy decisions that impact their bottom line. And there’s no better way to make sure lawmakers hear the industry’s point of view than meeting them in person.

ACRA members have a powerful story to tell policymakers about the importance of cultural resources management. As Congress debates policies that impact the CRM industry, it’s more important than ever to make sure lawmakers hear that story.

That’s why ACRA is holding its annual Capitol Hill Fly-In May 7-8, 2024.

Don’t miss this chance to join your fellow CRM professionals in meeting with your members of Congress to discuss issues important to the industry. ACRA will arrange your meetings and provide training beforehand. There is no cost to register for the Fly-In, but you are responsible for making your travel and lodging accommodations.

ACRA needs time to get your meetings scheduled, so sign up now before it is too late!

The Section 106 review process is critical to informing federal infrastructure planning and decision making. Key findings within this review process, including an agency’s findings about the eligibility of historic properties to the National Register and effects to them, can be the subject of disputes among consulting parties. In this webinar, explore the diagnosis of and strategies for resolving such disputes. Familiarity with consultation in the context of Section 106 reviews is recommended.

This webinar was designed and developed by the President's Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, which is an independent federal agency that promotes the preservation, enhancement, and productive use of our nation's historic resources, and advises the President and Congress on national historic preservation policy.

Archaeological artifacts - items made and used by humans - hold important information about the dynamics of past civilizations. The isotopic analysis of such artifacts can provide rich information about the origin of raw materials used to make items, trade histories and even uncover details on how the artifact was used. In this webinar, Beta Analytic and Isobar Science will be discussing the use of Lead (Pb), Strontium (Sr), Nitrogen ( 15N) and Carbon ( 13C) isotopes on metal artifacts, pigments, glass, textiles (including silk, wool, cotton and leather) and ceramics.

    The agenda will cover:

    • Introduction to Isotopes: cycling through the Earth’s spheres
      • Carbon, Nitrogen, Strontium & Lead cycles
    • Mine origin of metal artifacts (coins, weapons, jewelry) using Lead (Pb)
Lead as a major and minor element in various common metals
    • Natural components of pigments, dyes and glass using Lead (Pb) and Strontium (Sr)
    • Provenancing of flora and fauna textile sources using Strontium (Sr), Nitrogen ( 15N) and Carbon ( 13C)
    • Identifying organic and inorganic materials within ceramics using Strontium (Sr), Lead (Pb) Nitrogen ( 15N) and Carbon ( 13C)
    • Dating artifacts using Radiocarbon (14C)
    • Submitting samples for analysis

Miami-based Beta Analytic is an ISO 17025-accredited radiocarbon dating and stable isotope laboratory. Subsidiary Isobar Science provides uranium-thorium dating, strontium analysis and geochemical fingerprinting services, among others. The company specializes in isotope ratios using wet chemistry and MC-ICP-MS.

Archaeologists are in need of better strategies for managing assemblages of corroded metal artifacts, especially nails. There is an affordable middle ground between storing artifacts that will never be properly identified or conserved and discarding without proper documentation and identification. X-radiography is a cost-effective method for identifying artifacts obscured by corrosion, documenting diagnostic attributes, and helping collections managers and conservators work together to prioritize artifacts for treatment.

This seminar will cover the applications of x-radiography for archaeological collections managers, with a specific focus on cost savings. The program instructors will share their experiences using x-rays to create more accurate artifact catalogs and craft responsible discard strategies which reduce curation fees and result in cost savings for the overall project budget.

    Participants will learn:

    • How to “read” an artifact x-ray (how much core metal is present, what kind of metal is it, what do artifacts look like in two dimensions, etc.)
    • How to use x-rays as documentation of bulk metals (i.e. nails) so that these can be discarded with minimal loss of important analytical information
    • About the availability of x-radiography services, the costs of these services, and how obtaining x-rays can lead to cost savings for CRM projects.

Note: This webinar will occur on Eastern Time

    Presenters

    Sara Rivers Cofield, M.A.

Rivers Cofield specializes in the identification and interpretation of metal artifacts. She is the former Chair of the Curation and Collections Committee for the Society for Historical Archaeology, a member of the Society for American Archaeology’s Curation Interest Group, and Past Chair of the Archaeological Collections Consortium, a cooperative group comprised of collections professionals from SAA, SHA, and ACRA.

    Kerry S. González, M.A.

Kerry S. González is currently the Chief of Cultural Resource Management at George Washington Birthplace National Monument & Thomas Stone National Historic Site. Prior to entering into this role she worked in CRM for over 20 years. She is very active in the collections management field and is a strong advocate for improving and updating regional and national curation standards. She currently serves on collections committees for the American Cultural Resources Association (ACRA), the Society for Historical Archaeology (SHA), and the Council of Virginia Archaeologists (COVA), and engages in public and professional education and outreach through social media, professional publications, workshops, and webinars. Most recently Ms. González served as adjunct professor at the University of Mary Washington teaching American Archaeology for the Spring 2023 semester.

**Disclaimer: we are not conservators, so when it comes to the technical side of x-ray, like what settings to use, etc., you need to work with someone who has that expertise. We do not do the x-rays, but we are all about the applications of x-rays for metals.**
